Why Huatulco?

Huatulco is a destination that defies the chaos of other Mexican beaches. Unlike Cancun or Playa del Carmen, these 9 bays have largely remained pristine thanks to planned development and environmental protection policies. It's the perfect place for travelers seeking pristine beaches, world-class diving, and living local communities.

What makes Huatulco special is its trilogy: nature (the Biosphere Reserve surrounds you), adventure (diving, hiking, kayaking), and authenticity (local towns maintain their Oaxacan character). It's a place where tourism hasn't destroyed local culture.

The 9 Bays

Santa Cruz Bay: The largest and most developed, with the main tourist port. You'll find restaurants, hotels, and the center of marine life. White sand beaches, crystal-clear water.

Conejos Bay: Small, quiet, ideal for snorkeling. Deep waters but exceptional visibility.

Donaji Bay: Virgin, accessible only by boat. Spectacular diving with intact coral reefs.

Diving and Water Activities

Huatulco is a world-class diving destination. Coral reefs, diverse marine life (sea turtles, manta rays, harmless sharks), and exceptional visibility make it an underwater paradise.

Certified Diving: Local operators offer PADI certifications and guided dives. Cost: 2,500-3,500 MXN for two dives.

Snorkeling: Snorkeling tours to Conejos Bay or Donaji Bay. Price: 800-1,200 MXN (includes transport, guide, equipment).

Kayaking: Exploration of bays by kayak. 600-900 MXN per day.

Oaxacan Gastronomy

Huatulco is the gateway to Oaxacan gastronomy. Although small, it has restaurants serving ancestral dishes with fresh local market ingredients.

Oaxacan Ceviches: White fish, shrimp, octopus. Accompanied by aguachile and tostadas. 120-180 MXN.

Oaxacan Black Mole: Mexico's most complex sauce. Chocolate, chiles, spices. 150-200 MXN per plate.

Chapulines: Roasted grasshoppers, seasoned. Appetizer or starter. 80-120 MXN.

When to Visit

Best Time: November to April. Dry weather, warm water, excellent diving visibility.

Rainy Season: May to October. Fewer tourists, lower prices, but daily afternoon rain.

Hurricane Season: September-October are risky months. Travel not recommended.
